Why Do You Need To Transport Cake Pops Carefully?
Before you jump in the car and start delivering homemade treats to your favorite people on holiday, there are several things you should consider beforehand.
Cake pops are fragile little things that need to be handled with care. A little bump on the road or even the lightest push can ruin the look of your precious pops altogether!
That’s why you need to have proper precautions before transporting this dessert to any place. You need to take care of the frosting so that it doesn’t get mushed or the cake balls don’t get separated from the stick by any chance.
As these pops are a lot lighter in weight, you need to package them carefully so that they don’t rattle when shaken. Depending on how far the destination is, you should also consider the heat and humidity of the place you live in so that it doesn’t make your cake pops melt in the middle of the way.
Things To Consider While Making Cake Pops
If you intend to deliver your cake pops to a distant place, you need to keep several factors in mind.
1. First, you should make the desserts with study material. Try skipping too many decorative things if possible. Things like wings, ears on top of the coating will make your treat a lot more susceptible to breakage.
2. Next, while transporting the cake pops, sometimes the cake or oil inside the ball starts leaking. To prevent such occurrence, place the balls inside a sealed bag inside the refrigerated and freeze them overnight before delivering them.
3. The icing on the balls also matters a lot. Too much icing makes the balls mushy and more prone to get smudged. Always go for a little less frosting than what the recipe suggests if you mean to transport them to another place.
Different Methods For Transporting Cake Pops
Below are some of the popular methods used for transporting cake pops. You may choose to go with any solution that feels the easiest for you.
Cardboard Drink Carrier
Do you have some disposable drink carrier lying around?
They can be the perfect solution for transporting your precious cake pops!
Cardboard drink carrier usually comes with 2 compartments with a barrier between each compartment to hold 4 cups of beverages. The boxes are designed sturdily so that they can deliver your drinks without any spill or mess.
You need to wrap up the cake pops in plastics and put at least a dozen pieces in each compartment. The food will be secured inside the cardboard box and using the strong upper handle you can even carry the box easily wherever you go.
Make A Bouquet
Another creative way would be making a decorative bouquet with several pieces of cake pops.
For this method, you need to wrap each piece with plastic individually. Then use a flower pot (Or even a takeout box if you want to cheap out!) as a holder and put as many wrapped up cake pops as possible inside the pot/box.
You can also use foam inside the pot and make some holes in it to hold the treats if you want a better look for the bouquet.
Cake Pop Boxes
If you working professionally as a baker and want things to go more smoothly, use boxes that are specifically designed for transporting these sweet treats.
Cake pops boxes are built in a way to hold a lot of pieces of cake pops inside them. These boxes often come with transparent displays to showcase your creativity as well! The handle on the top will allow you to carry this box conveniently.
However, these boxes are a bit expensive and not everyone can afford to use them on a regular basis.
Carry Each Item Separately
If you are transporting the dessert by yourself and you intend to be present at the event you made the cake pops for, then this one is for you!
For this method, you need to skip the final step while making these little treats. Meaning, you will be only making the cakes and preparing the frosting beforehand.
However, instead of sticking the lollipop stick inside the cake, you will be carrying these items separately on a box/Tupperware in the car. Then when you arrive at the event and it’s almost time to serve, you will be preparing and assembling these delicious treats on the spot!
Another easy solution is to purchase a cupcake courier and use it to transport the cake pops.
Cupcake courier is originally designed to carry cupcakes inside it. However, you can also use it for carrying other dessert items if you want. Usually, these couriers come with stackable trays that can hold multiple cake pops securely in each section. This method is particularly helpful if you are shipping a large number of cake pops.
Shipping to a distant address?
Afraid the deliveryman might screw things up?
Then this one is for you!
For this method, you need to line a box with tissue paper to hold the treats in their places while transporting.
Next, put some bubble wrap on top of the tissue paper. These bubble wraps are going to work as a cushion so that the balls don’t get displaced even if the cargo is shaken a bit.
Then wrap the individual pop heads in plastic and start putting them inside the box one by one. You can layer the treats on top of each other in this way as they will be completely safe while traveling. Just make sure the heads don’t overlap while placing to keep their shapes intact. Instead, tuck each piece’s face to the opposite of the other one for the best result.
Once you are done placing all the treats, place another layer of bubble wrap on top of the box, put some tissue liner and secure the box with tape and string.
Double Box Method
The double box method allows you to be extra, extra careful with your package.
Here you will need 2 boxes of different sizes for this purpose. The outer box needs to be made of corrugated fiberboard for giving the inner box strong protection. For the inner box, we suggest using cake boxes that are typically used in the bakery for delivering cakes.
First, you need to layer the outer box with lots of tissue paper. After the bottom part is properly cushioned, arrange the cake pops in a single layer. If you have large quantities of these treats, then add a crumpled layer of tissue paper on top and then stack another layer of cake pop on top of it.
Once all the pieces are packaged nicely, add some more tissue on top and close the lid of the box. If you have a brand logo or sticker, you can place that on top of the box and put some decorative string around it.
Then get the outer box ready and put the cake box inside it. To provide some cushion, add some paper shreds all around the box and close the box securely with some tape and string.
What Is The Best Way To Store Cake Pops?
If you have a busy schedule and want to make these pops ahead of time before shipping, then you need to store them properly so that the taste stays intact.
The best way of storing these treats is to place them inside a vacuum-sealed bag before putting them in the freezer. If you don’t have a vacuum sealing machine at home, wrap each piece separately with plastic and then with aluminum foil. The double protection will help the cake pops retain moisture while not becoming soggy inside.
You can store these treats in this way for up to 1 week in the refrigerator.
Tips And Tricks
- If you live in a place where heat and humidity might cause a problem, put a cooler bag with 2/3 ice packs inside it. Then place the bag under the box of cake pops and put the whole setup inside a bigger package for the best result.
- If you are thinking about delivering your cake pops by post, then you need to consider the timing. Either use an overnight/expedited service or send the food to the postal office just before the closing time.
- For the postal delivery system, print a “Do NOT stack on top” label and stick it on top of your packaging. This way the postal carrier will know to handle it with extra care.
- After wrapping up the pops and packaging them tightly, take the box in your hand and shake a bit. Can you hear any sound? If not, then you are good to go!
